Star Trek: The Great Rewatching Marathon Page 8

Star Trek XII: Wrath of Reboots

After wiping the slate clean with Star Trek ‘09 and opening up an infinite universe with infinite stories to tell… they retell Star Trek: II. Poorly.

Geoff: I’ll admit, I disliked this movie a lot less watching this time around than I did when I first saw it. That said, it still annoys me.

“Hahaha let’s do the iconic Spock death scene but this time have Kirk do it and throw in the famous “Khaaaaan” line!”
“But why?”
“Because!”
“OMG THAT’S GENIUS!!!”

If you don’t know the series, these things won’t bother you. But you also won’t get much out of them, so… I don’t quite understand. Did they think fans wanted to see this story retold?

Like Star Trek ‘09 this one moves fast, and like a typical J.J. Abrams movie, while you’re swept up in it, it’s a fun ride. It’s only later you realize it’s a house of cards and nothing makes sense.

I don’t know, I have a hard time hating this movie because it is well made, it just wasn’t well conceived.

Carolina: They almost ruined this new universe by going back and redoing the Wrath of Khan storyline, arguably the best Star Trek movie out there. When you watch this movie you're entertained. You're going through the motions and you're excited to see what's going on. It's non-stop. After the movie is over and you start thinking about the story... that's when you notice all the plot holes and how they take direct scenes from the original and do nothing new with them besides switching the roles. As if the creators hope that this will convey the same emotions the original did, but with a "twist." With Benedict Cumberbatch's character, him being Khan all along, it means nothing for the newcomers and just pisses of old fans. I don't understand. Out of all the stories you can do in this universe, out of all the stories you could re-tell and make better, they chose the one that needed no update or improvement.

I’ll give it props, they found a better excuse to revive someone, at least compared to The Search for Spock and their new logic doesn’t open up a huge plot holes and does not leave good characters as idiots. It does, however, mean everyone is immortal now, right? You know what, forget I said anything.

In the end, the movie serves as a time killer. I'd certainly watch this movie over any of the bad Star Trek movies.

You cannot lump the so-called reboot with the rest of 'em, so they are last and not necessarily 11th, 12th and 13th, but last to anything based on the original timeline upon which all of the series that followed are based. The so called parallel universe or whatever reasoning they use to change the timeline completely destroyed any chance of those movies to be legitimately considered "Star Trek' movies. So there are 10 movies, really That I would order as follows

10- The Motion Picture- I still don't get it.
9- Final frontier- The idea is ridiculous
8- Generations- A great idea that was wasted- on so many levels.
7- Nemesis- Another great poorly done.
6- The Undiscovered Country- Well made and entertaining, but I sort of agreed with the "Villains"!
5- First Contact- Using the Zefram Cochrane character from "Metamorphosis" just worked.
4- The Search for Spock- The hocus-pocus ending had to happen, I guess!
3- Insurrection- Very entertaining, and dare I say, deep.
2- The Journey Home- Lighthearted entertainment.
1- Wrath of Khan- Probably the best sequel to a TV episode ever.

I won't dignify any of the new movies by ranking them here.

Only one question. Why on earth would you consciously submit yourself to such a fiasco? If you were able to sit through the worst acting performances ever, Hayden Christionsen being the worst, you are indeed a better than I 'Gunga Din.'

'Star Trek: Beyond' at the #2 & #4 position? Really? I found it too action-centric, and the humor, dialog, and aliens uninspired, and would place it along with the Shatner-directed 'Final Frontier' travesty near the bottom of the barrel. With that said, I'm certainly not optimisic for the next installment with Justin Lin at the helm again.

I think I was still suffering from a Nemesis hangover. The lighter tone was so welcome.

Geoff, I liked it as well. It's a fun movie and I loved all of the humor.

I guess I'm the only one who likes S.T. 1 despite it's obvious flaws. The long musical scenes and V'ger's exploration is a clear [to me anyway]"wink" at 2001 ASO,in style not thematically, and how Hollywood used to make "epics". Anyway I never found those scenes boring, and in retrospect it fits for the first movie, and to [re]introduce the entire ST world to larger audiences.
As for Beyond, I agree with it's detractors, that is among the worst the franchise has given us so far.

Boldly went where no moviegoer has gone before. Your detailed setup for the marathon and the collaborative ranking process make this a fun read. I am curious which one took the bottom spot for you both.
