The quality of sound from my 8805 is good enough that I use it as a stereo preamp as well as an SSP. I have a Mark Levinson No. 523 preamp that does sound better, but the Marantz is good enough that I frequently elect to use it instead of the No. 523 because of the HEOS function.

I agree. There was a noticeable improvement in sound over my 8802A, and I am no longer considering getting a separate two channel system. Plus, HEOS is simple enough to use (and controls power on/off and volume in 3 rooms) that my wife picked it up in one 2 minute session, and now can easily play the music she likes in her office, the back yard or the living room, all from her phone. It's the first audio device that I've installed in 20 years that she actually likes and doesn't complain about the complexity.
