Tee Grizzley: “Blow By Blow” + “You Hear Me” In Dolby Atmos On Apple Music
A-level guests on Tee’s fifth studio album include the likes of Future, 42 Dugg, Mariah The Scientist, and even his brother, Baby Grizzley. Synth loops and loping 808s permeate some of its backing tracks—cool choices due in no small part to one of the album’s key producers, Pi’erre Bourne (Drake, Playboi Carti).
I’m highlighting a pair of prime cuts here to give you a taste of the broad flavor of Post Traumatic, which is available in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music and other digital outlets. To best get inside the aural tenets of all the permeating P.T. vibes, I ultimately wound up preferring what I heard of them with my House of Marley Liberate XLBT headphones over what I got from my open-air system and AirPod Pro listening sessions.
“Blow by Blow”
“Blow by Blow” is a collaboration with the notable North Carolina rapper J. Cole, who tees up the tempo—and eagle ears will instantly discern the clever, slow-rolling weave-in/weave-out utilization of a classic Notorious B.I.G. hook to boot. Cole sets the table with a call for “no unnecessary accessories,” a key verbal M.O. that enables Bourne to let the magic synth burble swirl in the back as the bass throbs down the middle.
Cole’s early verses roll across the soundstage phrase-by-phrase—and please take heed of his, er, nod to K-pop!—for the first minute before Tee takes the mike, initially nestled in the center right and then over to the center left with Cole doubling and then responding to certain select words and phrases. The backing track drops out briefly when Tee calls out, “Hold up / Who ain’t rocking with me?” Hold up—that ain’t referring to us, seeing how we’re with you all the way and blow by blow, Tee and J.
“You Hear Me”
Next, West Memphis rapper YTB Fatt joins Tee on “You Hear Me,” which unfurls with a slightly more aggressive synth-strings backing track and skittery percussive motion to support it. Tee’s opening gambit is also a bit more out front in the mix, but that better reflects the song’s central premise and overall delivery.
The percussion moves hard and fast behind him, almost like a sneer ’n’ response with bits of laughter and scoffing floating by momentarily in the ether for good measure. The percussion drops out briefly as YTB Fatt takes over verse two, right up the middle. Tee rolls back in for verse three, each repetition of the title phrase at the end of each successive line becoming more and more insistent until the percussion drops again for a tick during the next sequence—and then he ramps up the flow to bark his last round of marching orders. (You hear me?) The final 20 seconds are pure instrumental Atmos manna, with insistent, dramatic piano lines at the forefront and keyboard chords holding down the all-channel fort to the fade.
Taken in full, inhaling Post Traumatic in Atmos will carry you across a litany of styles that infuse trap, modern rap, and even pieces of pop, all backed by Grizzley and company’s homegrown beats. Tee up P.T., and let its healing powers flow all over you in 360 degrees.
