Hisense 65H8G Quantum LCD Ultra HDTV Review Test Bench

Test Bench

The measurements here were made using CalMAN measurement software from Portrait Displays (portrait.com), together with Photo Research PR-650 and Klein K-10A color meters and a Murideo/AVPro (Fresco Six-G) test pattern generator. An Oppo UDP-203 player was used as the disc source throughout this review.

HD/SDR
Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio: Unmeasurable

In Theater Dark picture mode with the Backlight control at 60, Brightness at 50, Contrast at 31, and BT: 1886 Gamma selected, the 65H8G's peak white level measured 44 foot-lamberts (151 nits) and its black level at center screen 0.000 ft-L, resulting in an unmeasurable full-on, full-off contrast ratio.

In the Low Color Temperature setting at the peak white level shown, the SDR pre-calibration grayscale Delta Es from 20% to 100% ranged from 0.64 at 30% to 2.58 at 90%. Post-calibration, the Delta Es varied from a minimum of 0.22 at 80% to 1.71 at 100%.

(Delta E is a figure of merit indicating how close the color comes to the D65 HD standard at each point in the brightness range. Values below 3—some experts allow for 4—are generally considered visually indistinguishable from ideal. Above 4 but less than 10, the colors will be visibly changed but generally in ways unobjectionable to the average viewer).

Before calibration, the 65H8G's color Delta Es ranged from a maximum of 3.85 in blue to a low of 0.96 in green. After calibration the high was 2.81 in cyan and the low 0.59 in red. While the post-calibration color readings were not substantially better overall, and in some cases slightly worse, the post-calibration improvement in the red Delta E was judged more significant visually.

UHD/HDR
Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio: 89,477:1

In HDR Theater picture mode, peak white and black levels varied somewhat, particularly the latter. The above contrast ratio is an average of high and low readings that resulted in a peak white level of 599.5 nits and a black level of 0.0067 nits.

In the Low Color Temperature setting, the pre-calibration grayscale Delta E from 20% to 100% varied from a minimum of 0.64 at 100% to 6.2 at 70%. Post-calibration, the Delta Es varied from a minimum of 0.97 at 20% to a maximum of 4.49 at 70%. Apart from the latter, the post-calibration grayscale Delta Es never exceeded 1.8. The 70% deviation results from the knee of the PQ gamma curve, an unavoidable transition and not a flaw in the set. The specified knee in the PQ curve is abrupt and most sets round it off slightly, which will degrade the luminance (and therefore the Delta E) errors in the narrow range of the transition (the Delta Es here include luminance errors). The Hisense tracked the PQ standard as closely as any HDR set we've yet seen—at least after a reduction in the default contrast setting from the default of 50 to 44.

Before calibration the color Delta Es ranged from a maximum of 3.5 in green to a low of 1.1 in yellow. Post-calibration, none of the color Delta Es exceeded 1.67 (in green).

The HDR Color Checker test averaged 1.96 with luminance and 1.73 without luminance. The maximum measured Delta E was 3.79 with luminance and 3.6 without. The 65H8G covered 67.9% of Rec.2020 color and 93.4% of DCI P3, the latter measurement only 5% less than the best we've yet recorded on 4K sets, all of them far pricier than the Hisense. (DCI P3 is the maximum color gamut currently used for Ultra HD source material like 4K Blu-ray.)

The 65H8G's peak white levels measured 600 nits on a 10% window, 640 nits at 25%, 500 nits at 50%, and 440 nits at 100%.—TJN

I recently signed up with Melbet, and I have to say, I was impressed with how quick and easy the register process was. With options for one-click registration or full registration, I was able to choose the option that best suited my needs. And with straightforward instructions and prompts guiding me through each step, I was able to complete the process in just a few minutes.
