Don’t worry, if you feel a sense of déjà vu when you look at the new Triton One.R tower speaker, you’re not going crazy. It is, indeed, a near identical looking yet slightly scaled down version of GoldenEar’s celebrated Triton Reference flagship, one of Sound & Vision’s 2017 Top Picks of the Year. At $5,998/pair, the One.R costs 30% less than its big brother yet, in the words of reviewer Al Griffin, “delivers equally full-range sound, along with many of the same qualities that made that earlier speaker so impressive: clear, fleshed-out mids; airy, transparent highs; and linear, low-reaching bass courtesy of a built-in subwoofer that lends itself equally well to music or movie soundtrack reproduction.” You might look at this as something of a gift from company founder and industry legend Sandy Gross, who released it just before Christmas.

When you think MartinLogan, “subwoofer” is not the first thing that comes to mind, but the Kansas-based company, which made a name for itself building some of the world’s finest electrostatic speakers, has expanded its scope in recent years to include the formidable Dynamo Series of subwoofers, high-end soundbars, and other unexpected products. The newest model in the Dynamo line, the 1100X, will impress you not only with its “clean impact and dynamic wallop” but with its automated room correction and outstanding control app, which makes it possible to tweak bass performance to a fare-thee-well without leaving the couch. Reviewer Mike Trei summed things up when he observed: “The 1100X was able to move plenty of air and cause my listening chair to thrum and vibrate along with the bass.”
