I'm pleased to be developing and ultimately producing the new, built-from-scratch KLH Model Nine under the auspices of KLH Audio. The New Nine will have numerous improvements over the original. In the meantime, JansZen Audio can make available several pairs of meticulously refurbished and updated KLH Model Nines from our stock of originals.
Sony STR-DA5700ES Multichannel A/V Receiver HT Labs Measures
Two channels driven continuously into 8 ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 128.1 watts
1% distortion at 170.7 watts
Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 123.5 watts
1% distortion at 147.9 watts
Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 82.9 watts
1% distortion at 111.0 watts
Analog frequency response in Direct mode:
–0.06 dB at 10 Hz
–0.01 dB at 20 Hz
–0.03 dB at 20 kHz
–3.09 dB at 50 kHz
Analog frequency response with stereo signal processing:
–0.32 dB at 10 Hz
–0.09 dB at 20 Hz
–0.81 dB at 20 kHz
–60.29 dB at 50 kHz
This graph shows that the STR-DA5700ES’s left channel, from CD input to speaker output with two channels driving 8-ohm loads, reaches 0.1 percent distortion at 128.1 watts and 1 percent distortion at 170.7 watts. Driven into 4 ohms, the amplifier reaches 0.1 percent distortion at 143.9 watts and 1 percent distortion at 274.5 watts.
Response from the multichannel input to the speaker output measures –0.15 decibels at 10 hertz, –0.05 dB at 20 Hz, –0.07 dB at 20 kilohertz, and –3.16 dB at 50 kHz. THD+N from the CD input to the speaker output was less than 0.014 percent at 1 kHz when driving 2.83 volts into an 8-ohm load. Crosstalk at 1 kHz driving 2.83 volts into an 8-ohm load was –78.85 dB left to right and –76.15 dB right to left. The signal-to-noise ratio with an 8-ohm load from 10 Hz to 24 kHz with “A” weighting was –105.16 dBrA.
From the Dolby Digital input to the loudspeaker output, the left channel measures –0.06 dB at 20 Hz and –0.37 dB at 20 kHz. The center channel measures –0.03 dB at 20 Hz and –0.34 dB at 20 kHz, and the left surround channel measures –0.04 dB at 20 Hz and –0.30 dB at 20 kHz. From the Dolby Digital input to the line-level output, the LFE channel is +0.01 dB at 20 Hz when referenced to the level at 40 Hz and reaches the upper 3dB down point at 105 Hz and the upper 6dB down point at 111 Hz. —MJP
Video Test Bench
The STR-DA5700ES doesn’t offer any HDMI processing, but it passes the digital signals through unmolested. Its analog performance (not shown) is a mixed bag; it failed the Chroma Resolution horizontal burst frequency and was unable to pass whiter-than-white images. Like most processors, it failed the 2:2 cadence test but sailed through all the other benchmarks. —DV
