Sony Electronics Announces Availability of High-Definition Plasma Display

Last week, Sony Electronics announced that its newest 16:9 flat-panel plasma display, the PFM-510A1WU high-resolution 42" (viewable area, measured diagonally) monitor, is now available. Sony claims that the new monitor, originally debuted at NAB in April 1999, is one of the first on the market to offer over 1,000,000 pixel capability in a plasma display, and is capable of handling high-definition video signals.

According to Sony, the unit features 1024x1024 pixels and is capable of displaying HDTV digital signals, including 1080i, 480p, and 480i formats. The company says the display also has a built-in 10-bit scan converter that accepts signals from 15kHz to 80kHz, as well as RGB, NTSC, and PAL. Inputs include Y/C and component video, as well as stereo audio and RS-232C for remote-control capability.

Other features include a built-in anti-reflective screen which, Sony claims, diffuses reflective light to maintain contrast, detail, and color purity. Specifications indicate that the unit is only 6" deep and weighs less than 100 pounds, which makes wall-mounting feasible. The design also features retractable feet for simple installation, and carrying handles for portability.

Sony's Clint Hoffman states that "Sony is dedicated to providing products that meet the users' needs in the migration to high-definition technology." The company says that the PFM-510A1WU is available from resellers at a suggested retail price of $15,999.
