Morel SoundSpot Music Theatre 2 Ultra Speaker System HT Labs Measures

HT Labs Measures

Satellite Sensitivity: 86.5 dB from 500 Hz to 2 kHz

This graph shows the quasi-anechoic (employing close-miking of all woofers) frequency response of the SP-2 satellite (purple trace) and the PSW10 subwoofer (blue trace). The passive loudspeaker was measured with its grille at a distance of 1 meter with a 2.83-volt input.

The SP-2’s listening-window response (a five-point average of axial and +/–15-degree horizontal and vertical responses) measures +3.44/–2.65 decibels from 200 hertz to 10 kilohertz. An average of axial and +/–15-degree horizontal responses measures +3.46/–3.38 dB from 200 Hz to 10 kHz. The –3-dB point is at 161 Hz, and the –6-dB point is at 139 Hz. Impedance reaches a minimum of 4.69 ohms at 326 Hz and a phase angle of –69.06 degrees at 20 kHz.

The PSW10’s close-miked response, normalized to the level at 80 Hz, indicates that the lower –3-dB point is at 33 Hz and the –6-dB point is at 28 Hz. The upper –3-dB point is at 127 Hz with the Frequency control set to maximum.—MJP

I agree that this disc is nothing to crow about. To me it lacked any dynamics that a rock disc should have. I did not like the mix in some cases particulaly when a singing voice comes out other than the center. I did find the separation was quite good and heard center back sound as well.

Thank you kelsci. I would welcome more reader input about the specific attributes of surround mixes (even if I don't respond to it).

Mark,
I was intrigued by your review of the Morel speakers. How does this system compare to similar systems i.e. Focal dome, Orbs, Anthony Gallo micros/Adiva and B&W M1s?

From my perspective, the best use of surround when mixing music is to reinforce the sound of the stereo and to create a sense of space. Sometimes it's fun to have an effect move from the front to the back but in general, gimmicks like sticking the vocals in the back of the room or moving main instruments around in circles or taking a secondary part and sticking it in the surround always work to the detriment of the music.

Hey Mark,

Bluntly, Morel or Goldenear? You reviewed both of these almost back to back and with the some of the same materials.

Less bluntly, can you summarize the basic differences between these two recently reviewed speaker systems?
