Legacy Audio to Unveil Beastly Amp, Hi-Res Speaker

When 2019 CEDIA exhibits open tomorrow morning, the high-performance audio kings at Legacy Audio will take the wraps off their most powerful home theater amplifier to date and a new monitor designed to be the “highest resolution compact speaker available anywhere.”

One of the sexiest looking power amps you’ll find, the i ·V 7 has seven channels and is rated to deliver 600 watts into 8 ohms with all channels driven and said to be stable into loads as low as 2.7 ohms. At its core is state-of-the-art ICEedge Class D amplifier technology that Legacy says approaches 80% efficiency at full power. The amplifier supports 12VDC on/off triggering and will also be available in a rack-mountable eight-channel version for powering Dolby Atmos/DTS:X systems with height channels. Information on pricing and availability was not available.

Legacy says its new Calibre speaker is suitable for two-channel or multichannel surround applications and “designed to meet and exceed the stringent high performance standards of recording studio professionals and bring a new level of resolution to audiophiles in a sleek, compact design.”

Described as efficient yet able to “sail along” with a 500-watt peak input, the speaker combines a high-power-capable 4-inch AMT ribbon tweeter with a 7.5-inch custom midrange driver and an 8-inch woofer with “a full inch of displacement capability” in a uniquely angled cabinet.

“The clarity is the best I’ve ever heard in a compact design,” said chief engineer Bill Dudleston, noting that the speaker is designed to handle extreme dynamics and wide bandwidth. “Legacy has always been known for our huge soundstage, but this time it’s coming from a small box,” he added.

The Calibre will be offered in a passive version for $5,500/pair with a standard finish and a 500-watt powered Calibre XD version that accommodates passive and active biamplification for $6,780/pair, also with a standard finish. A variety of décor friendly finishes will be available.
