Sony Introduces Curved-Screen LCD HDTV

Sony has announced that its first curved-screen LED-based LCD television, the 65-inch KDL-65S990A, will be available in October at Sony Stores and select electronics retailers nationwide at the price of $4,000.

The TV is based on the latest generation of Sony’s Triluminos LED-backlit LCD panel and features a curved screen engineered to provide a greater sense of depth of field and allow for a wider viewing angle, according to the company.

Image processing is handled by Sony’s proprietary X-Reality PRO picture engine, Reality Creation database, and Super Resolution processor, which work together to optimize the color, detail, contrast, and sharpness of 2D and 3D images.

On the audio side, the TV draws on proprietary S-Force Front Surround signal processing and eight precisely angled speakers (six front, two surround) to deliver a surround-sound experience. The driver configuration includes dedicated tweeters.

The TV also incorporates Sony’s Smart Connect platform, which provides connectivity with Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Sony’s NFC-enabled One-Touch Mirroring and SideView app allow viewers to share content on the big screen. Establishing a wireless connection with the TV is a simple matter of touching an NFC-capable phone to the supplied remote control, according to the company. SideView enables a second-screen experience on a phone or tablet, providing access to social networks among other things.

The KDL-65S990A is available for preorder at sony.com.
