YouTube and Amazon Invade Your TiVo

It's a news two-fer day for TiVo. The company will enable YouTube video clips to be viewed through everyone's favorite DVR. And TiVo has also signed an e-shopping deal with Amazon.

Now you can watch YouTube videos on your TiVo, thanks to a deal between the two companies. While you can't store YouTube clips on the DVR, you can do just about everything else. That includes searching, browsing, and of course watching. Eventually TiVo users will also be able to log into their YouTube accounts to access channels and playlists as well. The new YouTube compatibility applies only to TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD DVRs. It will be enabled by a software upgrade to be rolled out over the next few weeks. See press release.

Meanwhile, TiVo will also enable product purchases through the DVR in partnership with Amazon. Imagine, your TiVo remote can now spend money. Keep a tight hold on it. Initial offerings will be tied into shows like Oprah, DeGeneres, and Colbert. For instance, you might buy a DVD or CD connected to a guest spot. You can also use TiVo's Universal Swivel Search to find products. Complete the transaction on the spot or add the products to your Amazon shopping cart. Notes TiVo's Evan Young: "Television advertisers and consumer products companies are no longer limited to the traditional linear shopping channels that require live viewing for product merchandising and fulfillment. If their product is seen or advertised on any TV show or network, and sold by Amazon.com it can be merchandised to viewers through TiVo." See press release.
