Vizio Rolls Out 2018 SmartCast OS to 2016-2017 TVs

The 2018 SmartCast operating system (OS) Vizio introduced last week as part of a major new-product rollout is now available on all 2018 Vizio smart TVs and will be added to all 2016 and 2017 SmartCast 4K TVs via free cloud-based updates.

The updated SmartCast platform has a built-in TV tuner for receiving over-the-air broadcasts and provides easy onscreen access to popular apps — including Netflix, Prime Video, Vudu, and thousands of Chromecast-enabled apps — voice support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, content recommendations based on what’s trending, and a universal search function that scans multiple apps.

SmartCast users can use Alexa or Google voice commands to turn their TVs on and off, change channels, adjust volume, and, in the case of Google Assistant, stream content to the TV.

"The versatility of SmartCast is complemented by our ability to push out free, cloud-based updates to users at any time,” said Vizio’s Chief Technology Officer Bill Baxter. “So regardless of when a user purchased their SmartCast product, they will be able to enjoy the latest apps, features and enhancements without having to wait on downloads."

The platform includes the SmartCast Mobile app, which lets users turn their smartphones into a touchscreen remote that can be used to browse and control content from a variety of sources.

Vizio said YouTube TV and a new steaming service geared to cord-cutters are coming soon to the SmartCast platform. The streaming service, which will “feel like a traditional cable TV service without the boxes, antennas and…subscription fees,” will provide access to more than a hundred free streaming channels covering news, sports, movies, talk shows, concerts, and more. Viewers will be able to browse and make selections from an on-screen guide.
