Though still a small part of the market, 4K/Ultra HD Blu-ray players are outpacing unit sales of original Blu-ray players in the same time frame, with 300,000 units sold in 2016 according to the Blu-ray Disc Association.

LG, Oppo, and Sony have entered the hardware market, joining Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, and Microsoft’s Xbox. The new format ended 2016 with 110 titles in print and 20 million units sold. Another 8.4 million UHD BDs may be sold in 2017, though that would still be only 4 percent of worldwide Blu-ray sales, says Futuresource Consulting.

The dominant source of UHD content is streaming, with 17 million households worldwide having both a UHDTV and access to UHD from a subscription service.
