SVS Builds ‘Cost-No-Object’ Features into New $800 Tower

Youngstown, Ohio-based speaker specialist SVS today announced that the Prime Pinnacle tower speaker it previewed at CES 2019 is now available for $1,600/pair in black ash or $1,800/pair in gloss black.

The latest addition to the company’s popular Prime Series, the speaker borrows “multiple cost-no-object design elements” from the flagship Ultra Series and features a first-its-kind driver array with a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter mounted between a 5.25-inch glass-fiber-composite midrange driver and a trio of 6.5-inch woofers, each housed in its own ported sub-enclosure. All of the drivers are new designs, and the speaker is timbre-matched with models in the Prime and Ultra series for system building flexibility.

SVS says the floorstander was engineered with three woofers to deliver a “bold full-range listening experience” — one able to “convey the full thrill and excitement of cinematic blockbusters yet refined enough to render the pluck of a bass guitar string.” In a unique arrangement, three port-tuning frequencies are used to ensure the drivers “blend seamlessly together” with a smooth transition to the midrange. The system is rated down to 29 Hz (±3 dB).

The tweeter is loaded in an FEA-optimized diffuser engineered to deliver broad dispersion and a “convincing soundstage with pinpoint on- and off-axis frequency response.” The company’s three-way SoundMatch crossover is tuned to deliver “precise imaging and the largest sweet spot possible.”

Each of the four chambers that make up the 40-inch-tall enclosure is acoustically tuned to “eliminate any potential for resonances or sonic artifacts,” and rigid bracing is used to make the cabinet sonically inert. All drivers are flush-mounted to minimize edge diffraction and the front baffle has chamfered edges to further enhance acoustic performance. A removable cloth grille and five-way binding posts round out the package.

“When we set out to design the Prime Pinnacle speaker, it was supposed to be a straightforward execution that came as close to the performance of our reference Ultra Tower as possible, but in a more room-friendly cabinet design at a lower price,” said SVS president Gary Yacoubian.

“The reality is, we spent more time voicing Prime Pinnacle than any speaker in SVS history so it would be equally suited for the demands of discerning audiophiles and hardcore home theater fans. To go even further, Prime Pinnacle’s profile had to blend seamlessly and sound amazing in any listening environment. The dedication paid off because it truly stands alone at its price and well beyond.”
