Sonos Announces Sonos One ‘Bundle’ Deal

Sonos today announced a limited-time deal on its new Sonos One smart speaker, one of Sound & Vision’s 2017 Top Picks of the Year in the Value category.

Starting tomorrow — Friday, January 26 — Sonos is offering a $49 discount on the purchase of two Sonos One speakers. The “Sonos Two” offer is available through participating retailers and on sonos.com.

The company also highlighted recent updates for the speaker, including voice support for Spotify, better wake word detection in noisy environments or when you’re speaking softly, a streamlined set-up process, and added support for the Alexa-enabled Flash Briefings feature, which provides a digest of daily news.

The Sonos One launched last October with the Alexa voice service and Sonos plans to add support for Google Assistant and Apple AirPlay2 “in 2018.”

In a thinly veiled swipe at Apple, which begins taking pre-orders for its HomePod smart speaker Friday, chief marketing officer Joy Howard said: “We believe in freedom of choice and don’t want to lock people into a specific ecosystem — it’s why we support more than 80 streaming services globally and will take an agnostic approach to voice assistants as well.”

The company also took a shot at Apple in a The New York Times print ad that calls out “Big Tech.” The headline reads “Freedom of Choice” and shows a photo of the Sonos One with graphics that highlight several of the music services it supports. Supporting text reads: “Big Tech wants to lock you into one music service. We think what you listen to should be up to you. That’s why we support over 80 music services, more than any other smart speaker system.”

This is a nice deal. But SONOS needs to update their products to make them more open (Open is one thing that the HomePod won't do). They should add the audio-in port to a new SONOS THREE with alexa and 5 microphones to map out a room. Then they should add blueTooth/APTx to new SONO FIVE also with microphones. The playbar/base needs to add HDMI ports. Ideally they would support some level of high Rez autido in a couple years.
