Sonos and Sonance Partner on Architectural Speakers

Sonos today announced a new line of in-wall/ceiling and outdoor speakers designed and built in partnership with Sonance and optimized for use with the Sonos Amp.

The goal of the partnership is to “produce speakers that disappear into any space while providing clear sound, even coverage, high-quality performance, and ease of use,” according to Sonos.

The Sonos Architectural by Sonance collection comprises three models optimized for use with the recently introduced Sonos Amp ($599), which is said to be more than twice as powerful as its predecessor and supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 streaming platform in addition to more than 100 streaming services.

The Sonos In-Ceiling model ($599/pair) is designed to bring music into any room and described as ideal for “spacious, ambient listening.” The round speaker includes an optional square grille that can be painted to match the ceiling.

The In-Wall model ($599/pair) is designed to deliver “targeted, immersive sound for home theater” and also comes with a paintable grille cover.

Sonos has rounded out the initial lineup with the Outdoor model ($799/pair), engineered to withstand humidity, water, salt spray, heat, UV rays, and freezing temperatures.

The indoor models are slated to deliver starting February 26 but available for preorder now at sonos.com. The Outdoor speaker will follow in April.

Up to three pairs of speakers can be powered by a single Sonos Amp, and all of the new models incorporate dynamic bass processing to enhance low frequencies for a richer listening experience.

When paired with the Sonos Amp, the In-Ceiling and In-Wall speakers tap into Sonos’ proprietary Trueplay speaker tuning system, which accounts for the size, construction, and furnishings of the room in which the speakers are installed, and automatically adjusts the EQ for optimal sound.

“Our goal was to create a solution optimized for installers, bringing the Sonos experience to architectural speakers for the first time,” said Sonos CEO Patrick Spence. “Sonance was the natural partner, sharing our passion for high quality, reliable solutions inside and outside the home.”
