Shinola Expands Audio Lineup with Wireless Earphones

Shinola, the Detroit-based industrial design and manufacturing company, today expanded its audio lineup with wireless earphones developed in collaboration with Portland, Oregon-based earphone specialist Campfire Audio.

The Bluetooth In-Ear Monitors ($250) are built around 0.3-inch “beryllium” drivers housed in durable PVD-coated stainless-steel enclosures and receive signals wirelessly via aptX HD-enabled Bluetooth, which can handle 24-bit audio resolution with supported devices. The earphones employ USB-C connectivity for faster charging and have two built-in batteries, which is said to extend playtime to 12 hours per charge.

Up to two devices can be simultaneously connected to the earphones, which have an in-line microphone/control box with a multifunction button and volume up/down keys. The cable running between the earbuds has a custom “micro miniature coaxial connector” at either end to make it easier to replace or swap out cables.

Technical specs include a rated frequency response of 10 Hz-20 kHz with less than 1% distortion, impedance of 16.5 ohms (at 1 kHz), and a sound-pressure level of 104dB/1mW.

The earphones are available in gloss black or silver stainless steel and come with a selection of silicon and memory foam eartips, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and a fabric travel case.

Founded in 2014, Campfire Audio is the brainchild of Ken Ball, plant pathologist turned audio maven who became known for “hand-building some of the finest portable cables in the world.” Today, the company offers a dozen in-ear monitors, ranging in price from $199 to $1,499 as well as replacement cables and other earphone-related accessories.
