Plus Audio Unveils High-End All-in-One Record Player

Fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled the company’s funding goal, London-based Plus Audio is unveiling a turntable-based all-in-one music system next week at the New York Audio Show.

Created by Scandinavian designer Alexander Åhnebrink, The+Record Player aims to bring some respect to all-in-one record players, which aren’t exactly known for their sound quality. The system is distinguished by its custom-built Pro-Ject turntable, an “ultra-low noise” preamplifier, and a 100-watt bi-amplified audio section with two high-excursion 3.5-inch woofers and a pair of 1-inch soft-dome tweeters, each driven by its own dedicated amp channel.

To overcome the lack of stereo separation due to speakers are less than 20 inches apart, Plus Audio developed a wide listening mode to expand the sound stage.

The system supports Bluetooth so you can stream music from a smartphone or tablet and offers a host of connections, including an optical digital input, two-way USB port, analog line input and output, and a front-panel headphone output and minijack aux input. A 5-volt output is also provided for use with an outboard streaming device such as Amazon’s Echo Dot or Google’s Chromecast Audio.

The+Record Player is slated to begin shipping in early 2018 with a retail price of $1,199 for the standard version, which is equipped with an aluminum tonearm and Ortofon OM10 phono cartridge, and $1,399 for the limited-edition Carbon, which is fitted with a carbon-fiber tonearm and Ortofon 2M Red phono cartridge. Both models feature a wood veneer cabinet with aluminum accents and the choice of a maple or walnut finish.

Gee, and I thought the Montgomery Wards Airline I bought in 1965 was the greatest ever.
