Pioneer's Patent Victory

Don't mess with Texas.  Marshall, Texas, that is. Marshall is the hotbed of patent infringement cases, and true to form, Marshall has ruled for the plaintiff - in this case, Pioneer Electronics.

Japanese manufacturer Pioneer Corp. successfully sued South Korea's Samsung for two infringement violations of patents involved with plasma display technology. For the truly inquisitive, the patents in question are U.S. Patent numbers 5,182,489 and 5,640,068.

Take a guess at how much the jury awarded Pioneer.

The jury from Marshall ruled that Samsung willfully infringed the patents and would have to pay Pioneer $59,351,480.

The $59 million verdict is just one more case settled in this small Texas town that's making a name for itself in the patent business. -Leslie Shapiro
