P&F USA, the exclusive licensee for Philips TVs and video products in North America, has announced the availability of a long-awaited Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) update for two of its 4K UHD Blu-ray players.

Owners of the BDP7502 ($200 on Amazon) and BDP7302 ($160 at Sam’s Club) can now download the Dolby Vision update directly from the internet or load it onto a USB drive or CD and download it to the player from there. Both players also support HDR10, the baseline spec for HDR content.

Unlike the static HDR10 HDR format, which establishes HDR metadata for an entire film, Dolby Vision metadata is dynamic, allowing for changing brightness on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis.

“HDR is a significant advancement in picture technology that delivers tangible improvements in image quality, but Dolby Vision goes further and transforms an HDR picture into something that is truly stunning,” said Peter Swinkels, general manager, product planning for P&F USA. “Dolby Vision is not just greater dynamic range and wider color gamut; it is also smarter pixels that deliver the best possible viewing experience for consumers.”

Dolby Vision HDR is currently used in more than 200 movies and in more than 200 hours of episodic content.
