Onkyo has announced the availability of a second mid-priced THX-certified AV receiver, a 9.2-channel follow-up to the 7.2-channel TX-NR686 introduced last month at $649.

The new TX-NR787 ($799), the first receiver to include AccuEQ Advance, an upgraded version of Onkyo’s proprietary AccuEQ auto-calibration system, is also THX Certified Select for medium sized rooms up to 2,000 cubic feet and rated to deliver 9 x 100 watts of FTC-rated power into 8 ohms (two channels driven).

DTS:X and Dolby Atmos surround sound processing for 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 speaker layouts is onboard along with Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing to enable a 3D surround-sound effect from legacy Dolby and DTS soundtracks played through any speaker layout, even those with height channels.

The receiver supports passthrough of the 4K high dynamic range (HDR) video formats HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) in addition to BT.2020 color space, 4:4:4 color sub-sampling, 24-bit video, 4K/60p video, and HDCP 2.2 via its six rear HDMI inputs, Main Out, and Sub Out. An additional non-HDR-compatible HDMI input is located on the front panel for convenience.

Onkyo’s new AccuEQ Advance is described as a “premium multi-point room-acoustic calibration system that eliminates standing waves,” which can muddle sound quality. The new system allows users to place the setup mic in three positions to “ensure optimal imaging…following an easy automated calibration process.”

The new calibration routine is supplemented with Onkyo's AccuReflex processing, which “aligns the phase of directional and non-directional sounds for cohesive…object-based audio reproduction through Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker systems.”

Music options include support for hi-res audio streaming and access to Amazon Music, Tidal, TuneIn, Deezer, Pandora, and Spotify streaming services in addition to support for Bluetooth streaming, AirPlay, DTS Play-Fi, FlareConnect, and Chromecast built-in with Google Assistant voice control available for compatible devices — all controllable via the Onkyo Music Control App.

Powered Zone 2 and Zone 3 outputs have their own dedicated digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for playback of the same or different sources in remote rooms; a Zone 2 line-output is also included for sharing content with another audio system.
