NFL 3D: Instant Replay

We told you about the 3D broadcast of the NFL game last Thursday night at a few theaters across the country. Wondering how it went?

Some scores, some fumbles, but overall, you could call it a success.

There were two satellite glitches that caused blackouts in the theaters in Boston, New York and Los Angeles, but honestly, that can happen in any situation. Half of Colorado missed huge portions of the Beijing opening ceremonies because of a satellite issue. Glitch happens.

A few camera moves and dissolves had the audience ripping off their 3-D glasses, but overall, it seemed like a success.

See what viewers and the co-founder of 3ality Digital had to say about the event.

According to an AP report,

"It's amazing," said Chad Ahrendt, a 35-year-old writer from Los Angeles who attended the screening in Hollywood. "Technically they obviously have a little ways to go, but once they work out all the kinks, it's definitely the new era of television."

John Modell, 48, co-founder of 3ality Digital LLC said the demonstration "was a good learning experience, and that team owners viewing in New York and Boston had told him they were pleased."

"They're all knocked out," he said.

The NFL has said that they'll provide free 3D if the technology becomes more widespread. At the moment, only about 2 percent of TV sets in the US are 3D compatible.

Would you pay more for 3D? Is the NFL even the best showcase of the technology? Wanna check it out for yourself? Fox has announced plans to show the BCS National Championship college football game in 3D at a variety of locations. Let's hope that one is glitch-free.  —Leslie Shapiro
