The HomePlug Powerline Alliance has released details on the second-generation version of its technology which allows home networking via power lines.

HomePlug AV2 will allow MIMO, meaning multiple inputs and outputs to handle more devices. Also on the increase are throughput speed, transmission range, and operating spectrum. The result will be an increase in overall performance by a factor of five. So you'll be able to network a broadband connection, multiple 1080p streams, 3D, 2K x 4K ultra-res HDTV, security cams, and internet gaming. The new spec will be backward compatible with the old one. It will be finalized in the first quarter of 2011.
