New Sonus faber Subwoofer Boasts App-Control

Italian speaker specialist Sonus faber today introduced a 600-watt powered subwoofer featuring a leather-wrapped cabinet, app control of multiple setup parameters, and optional wireless connectivity.

Slated to ship in February with a retail price of $2,750, the new Gravis III is the latest addition to the company’s Gravis collection, bringing the number of subwoofers in the line to five.

The subwoofer mates a 10-inch ultra-long throw driver with 600-watt a Class AB amplifier, and digital signal processor (DSP) in an enclosure measuring about 16 x 16 x 19 inches. The driver features a stiff yet light “trilaminated sandwich” cone with a honeycomb middle layer designed to resist flexing. Sonus faber says it chose a traditional Class AB amplifier for its musicality, huge energy reserve, fast response, and wide frequency range.

Input options include a four-pin speaker-level connector, unbalanced line-level RCA jacks, and an XLR connector for balanced signal transfer. An optional wireless transmitter/receiver is available for making a wireless connection between the subwoofer and receiver/preamp/processor.

DSP controls can be selected and adjusted via a “user-friendly” app available for Android and iOS devices. The app puts volume, automated room calibration, four presets, and eight parametric equalizer settings at your fingertips in addition to selectable auto-on/off and controls for adjusting cutoff frequency (40-150 Hz), phase (0 to 360°), and delay (1 to 20ms) to properly integrate the sub with the main speakers.

Designed to match Sonus faber’s newer Olympica Nova speaker collection, the Gravis III exudes elegance with a matte walnut or dark brown wengè top, side panels wrapped in black leather, and removable fabric grille.
