JVC LT-32X776 LCD HDTV HT Labs Measures

HT Labs Measures: JVC LT-32X776 LCD HDTV

Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio—579:1; ANSI Contrast Ratio—493:1

Measured Resolution with the Leader LT-446:
480: 480 (per picture height)
720p: 490 (pph)
1080i: 720 (pph)

DC Restoration (poor, average, good, excellent): Excellent (Poor with Dynamic Gamma on)

Color Decoder (poor, average, good, excellent): Good

Measured Color Points:
Red Color Point: x=0.624, y=0.332
Green Color Point: x=0.273, y=0.600
Blue Color Point: x=0.147, y=0.064

The left chart shows the LT-32X776's gray scale relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the high color-temperature mode and the Theater Pro gamma mode, measures cool with dark images, warm with low midtones, cool again with high midtones, and warm again with the brightest images. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray-scale curve is identical, but slightly cooler, putting more of the gray scale near D6500 K, the accurate color temperature, across the entire range.

The right chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue color filters. These are off those specified by SMPTE. Red is slightly undersaturated, blue is slightly oversaturated and very slightly purplish-blue. Green is bluish-green.

After calibration, and using a full-field 100-IRE white (70.62 foot-lamberts) and a full-field 0-IRE black (0.122 ft-L), the contrast ratio was 579:1. Using a 16-box checkerboard pattern (ANSI contrast), the contrast ratio was 493:1. The best contrast ratio was achieved in the 00 energy saver mode. The brightest image was achieved in the +30 energy saver mode produced 103.7 ft-L with a 100-IRE window and 0.186 on a 0-IRE black (558:1) The best black level was achieved in the –30 energy saver mode, and produced 34.9 ft-L and 0.064 ft-L (545:1).—GM
