Heavy Metal: Boston Acoustics System 9000II

Bundled speaker systems are great solutions for folks just getting into home theater or looking to put together a secondary system in a small room. Boston Acoustics has just this market in mind with its new System 9000II, a five-channel-plus-subwoofer package that retails for right around a thousand bucks.

The system consists of a subwoofer, three matching Micro 90xII front speakers, and a pair of Micro 80xII surround speakers. Front speakers feature 1" anodized dome tweeters; the surrounds feature .75" domes. All include 3.5" copolymer midrange drivers with butyl surrounds. System impedance is 8 ohms; frequency response is 29Hz-20kHz. A rated output level of 89dB means this system will work well with amplification from 15 watts to as much as 125 watts per channel.

The self-powered Micro 90pv II subwoofer handles low frequencies below 150Hz. Its 120 watts/4 ohms amplifier drives a 10" downward-firing driver with butyl surround. A matching pedestal, the MRB II, is available as an extra-cost option.

All-aluminum enclosures add to the 9000II's great sound and high-tech appeal. The subwoofer is finished in black; the front and surround speakers are available in either black or silver. Shipping weight on the entire system is 65 lbs.
