Focal Expands Flagship Utopia Speaker Lineup

Focal, the French maker of high-end speakers, is expanding the flagship Utopia III speaker line it introduced a decade ago with two new three-way models and updates to the Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo models.

The new Maestro Utopia Evo ($65,000/pair) and Scala Utopia Evo ($40,000/pair) are slated to ship in September and incorporate Focal’s latest innovations, including tuned mass damping (TMD) suspension, which is said to provide a linear frequency response between 1 and 4 kHz with dramatically reduced distortion. The benefits are improved stereo imaging and a more neutral midrange, according to the company.

Focal says it has also made strides in stabilizing magnetic fields to avoid harmonic and intermodulation distortion with its NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit) technology.

In addition to incorporating all of Focal’s latest R&D-based innovations, the four-way Grande Utopia EM Evo ($240,000/pair) and three-way Stella Utopia EM Evo ($130,000/pair, shown above) have been updated with a redesigned crossover, aluminum reinforcement rings around key drivers to increase rigidity, and new acoustic wadding, which is said to produce “extremely restrained, controlled bass.”

All models are available in a black or white lacquer or one of three automotive-inspired finishes: Blue, Ash Grey, and British Racing Green.
