Not content to simply repackage some of its many models of drivers for in-wall applications, Danish loudspeaker manufacturer Dynaudio went back to the drawing board to come up with some totally new designs.

The result? The Dynaudio IP 24, the company's first architectural model. The IP 24 in-wall loudspeaker marks Dynaudio's move into the custom installation market. The company's engineers spent "an exhaustive amount of time in research and development to create new driver topologies specifically for architectural applications to produce the finest in-wall loudspeaker available, with drivers capable of performing at a very high level of quality in the severely compromised acoustic environment of an infinite baffle," according to a recent announcement. They also came up with a mounting "assembly devoid of resonance," and easy to install. The IP 24 is said to represent "a whole new level of quality and performance previously unimaginable in this category."

The four-ohm, two-way IP 24 has an 8.75" woofer with a 3" aluminum voice coil, and a 1.1" soft dome tweeter. The design is derived from Dynaudio's Contour series loudspeaker, as is its audiophile-grade crossover circuit, and is said to offer a performance similar to the freestanding models. Frequency response is 40Hz-23kHz +/-3dB; sensitivity is 90dB@2.8V/1M; and power handling is 150 watts RMS, a very high figure for an in-wall speaker. Bass is claimed to be unusually good, and the tweeter output level can be varied to match the acoustics of the room.

The baffle is a thick piece of MDF, and the mounting frame is made of die cast aluminum, rather than the molded plastic common with other in-wall designs. Installation is simple once the wall has been opened up; no mounting rings or accessory brackets are needed to install the IP 24. The white steel mesh grille and aluminum frame can be painted to match the walls. Dynaudio believes that its new product "sets new standards" for in-wall speakers. The IP 24 makes its official debut at CEDIA EXPO 2001 (September 7-9) in booth #1048 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The IP 24 will ship to dealers at the end of September, with a suggested price of $1399.00 per pair.
