DirecTV Fixes Some STBs for 3D

Just bought a new 3DTV, DirecTV subscribers? Then some of you will be glad to hear that an upgrade to your set-top box will bring 3D channels to your satellite feed. Unfortunately this applies only to newer STBs, so other subscribers will need to replace the box altogether to get 3D.

If you've got an H21, H23, H24, or HD21 box, you're in. HR20 boxes will not be able to process or play HD content but will be able to download it. First-generation H.264 HD (and older) boxes cannot receive the upgrade. There is also the issue of whether your 3DTV is compatible with DirecTV's chosen 3D format. You lucked out if you own certain Samsung, Panasonic, or Mitsubishi models.

Upcoming 3D programming on DirecTV will include the ESPN World Cup and Major League Baseball plus various pay and on-demand channels.
