The newest addition to Denon’s Heos line of wireless multiroom products is a high-style AV receiver that pushes traditional AVR design in a new direction—one that exudes simplicity.

Slated to ship in April at $999, the Heos AVR combines 5.1-channel surround sound with Wi-Fi-based multiroom streaming in an app-based component described as “ultra-simple” to set up and use and designed to reduce cable clutter when used with a Heos wireless subwoofer and wireless rear surround speakers. At the same time, the receiver can feed wireless speakers in other rooms and supports Bluetooth streaming from phones, tablets, and other portable devices.

The 4K-ready receiver uses cool running Class D amplification to deliver 5 x 50 watts of power (rated at 8 ohms with 0.05 percent distortion), provides access to Spotify Connect, Pandora, and Tidal, supports high-resolution audio streaming, and is equipped with four HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2-compatible inputs.

The Heos AVR can learn TV commands, which simplifies home theater operation by enabling the TV remote to control key receiver functions, and supports Audio Return Channel (ARC) for a one-wire hookup between the receiver and TV.

Other highlights include Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround processing, “intuitive app-based set-up and operation with a compact remote included for more traditional control, and support of all major streaming formats, including DSD (2.4, 5.6 MHz), FLAC, WAV, ALAC (24/192), MP3, WMA, and AAC.
