Apple TV App Now Available on 2019 LG Smart TVs

LG today announced that the Apple TV app, which will be available via a firmware upgrade on its 2020 smart TVs that ship later this year, is now available on 2019 model-year smart TVs.

Compatible 2019 models include LG’s OLED TVs, SM9X and SM8X series NanoCell TVs, and, later this month, UM7X and UM6X series 4K Ultra HD TVs.

Accessed from the LG Home Launcher on the home screen, the Apple TV app enables TV owners to subscribe to the Apple TV+ streaming service Apple launched last fall.

The app also enables TV owners to subscribe to Apple TV channels, access their iTunes video library, and peruse more than 100,000 movies and TV shows available for purchase or rental.

The addition of the Apple TV app rounds out the Apple capabilities of LG’s 2019 TVs, which also support Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit.

AirPlay 2 lets viewers share or mirror content from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac on the TV screen or play music and sync it with other AirPlay 2-compatible speakers in the home. HomeKit enables viewers to operate the TV through the Home app on an iPhone or iPad or via Siri voice control. Control options include turning the TV on and off, adjusting volume, switching inputs, and more.
