Universal Studios Home Entertainment will begin selling double-sided discs with Blu-ray on one side and DVD on the other.

The announcement came two days ago. Initial titles will include The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum for $29.98 each. Both sides of the discs will include bonus material.

This will be a boon to households where DVD players outnumber Blu-ray players, not to mention DVD-limited cars and laptops. It will also give pre-Blu late adopters a chance to stockpile high-def discs while saving their pennies for whatever their dream players might be.

This is not the first time Universal issued two-sided "flipper discs." The idea first surfaced with HD DVD and DVD-Video combos. But this is the first time Blu-ray has been paired with DVD on a single disc.
