Vizio XVT553SV LCD HDTV Settings

Settings

Unit-to-unit sample variations, the viewing environment, and the source might render these recommendations less than optimum. They are provided only as a potentially useful starting place.

The settings here that are most likely to translate reliably from one sample to another are those involving specific features with only a few setting options, such as Gamma and Noise Reduction. The ones most likely to be subject to sample variations are video controls offering a wide range of settings. This will be particularly true here for the White Balance (color temperature) and color management adjustments (where available).

While experimenting with the user menus' controls can do no damage and can easily be reset, we do not provide settings for service menu adjustments. Random alterations of such controls without detailed knowledge of what they do may corrupt a set's firmware. This will likely require extensive in-shop repairs that are not covered under the warrantee.

We strongly recommend that you find the optimum basic video settings for your sample by using one of the many display setup DVDs that are available, such as Digital Video Essentials (DVD) or DVE HD Basics (Blu-ray). A full calibration, particularly of the gray scale and color gamut, is best left to a trained and properly equipped technician such as those certified by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) or THX.

No service-level adjustments were required—or used—for this review.

Mr. Norton,

I purchased the XVT553SV based on your review and an in-store viewing, and am completely satisfied with my decision, especially since I picked it up for $1,200.

I've found the settings you provided in your review to be extremely pleasing, but I do have one question: What Color Temp were those settings associated with?

The Color Temp is not provided in the online article and I've lost my copy of the original issue in which the review first appeared. I am currently utilizing the "Normal" setting, but would appreciate it if you would provide me with the setting you found to be most preferable/accurate.

My Way-Back machine is out for repair but fortunately I have my review notes. Like all such notes they can be a bit dicey to interpret a year and a half after they were written. But it does appear that Normal was the setting I used. If you're happy with the results, that's the most important thing.

Thank you for your quick response. I am happy with the settings, as well as the set, itself. Nothing like watching my Giants win the Super Bowl on a big screen that's well-calibrated to present amazing images.

As much as I enjoy the quality of the picture, I believe the kids get a bigger kick from showing their friends how they can "multitask." Although I'm not sure if simultaneously watching TV and updating their Facebook status using the built-in QWERTY keyboard on the remote qualifies as true multitasking.

Thanks again.
