Vintage Audio on Display at NY AES Show

The Audio History Library is displaying select gems from its collection of vintage audio gear at the 139th International AES Convention, which runs today through Sunday at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The display features vintage microphones including a Western Electric carbon button microphone, the Calrec “Soundfield” microphone, and the Electro-Voice 664 dynamic cardioid, also known as the “Buchanan Hammer.” The "world’s first audio amplifier" will also be on display along with a Thorens hand-crank phonograph, and the rare green Emerson Catalin radio.

“We are currently searching for a permanent home for the Audio History Library and Museum and we hope AES attendees will help us with that search,” said director Louis Manno in a press release statement. “The library’s vision and purpose is to re-introduce our multi-faceted audio industry into the public’s social consciousness and a permanent home will enable everyone from industry veterans to recent graduates to benefit from a better understanding of our unique and fascinating history.”
