Verizon Ditches FiOS Contracts

Thinking of signing up for Verizon's FiOS fiber optic TV, internet, and phone service? The company now offers a new incentive: You can get the service on a month-to-month basis, with no contract and no termination fee.

There is a catch. The offer applies only to new customers, not existing ones, who are still subject to cancellation fees if they break their contracts early. The price is $99 per month plus taxes and fees, ending a $20 per month premium for month-to-month service. Verizon also offers a two-year price guarantee with no penalties if you cancel within 30 days (after that a cancellation fee applies).

The move is probably a response to TV ad blitzes launched by Verizon's cable competitors, who make a big deal of the cancellation fees. One particularly acerbic campaign from Optimum Online stars a fake lookalike version of the FiOS installation guy from Verizon's ads, who is constantly trying to woo people away from cable, only to be corrected by his mom.
