Valentine's Day (Blu-ray) Valentine's Day (Blu-ray)

A day in the life of a diverse group of Los Angelenos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine's Day. Couples and singles live through the pinnacles and pitfalls of finding, keeping, or ending relationships in a day in the life of love.

An all-star cast with 19 of the most recognized faces in Hollywood join director Garry Marshall in this ambitious project. Unfortunately it falls flat on its face with too many storylines and tepid pacing. I think the concept would have been better served to narrow down the focus and center the concept around Jennifer Garner's and Ashton Kutcher's since they were the most compelling.

Video Highlights

  • VC-1/1080p encode on a BD-50 disc

  • Rich color saturation

  • Varying level of detail

  • Inconsistent contrast throughout the film

  • Horrendous banding during the airport scene

Audio Highlights

  • DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack

  • Intelligible dialog

  • Front-loaded presentation

  • Excellent musical soundtrack
  • Pedestrian sound design

I'm not sure whether to peg the blame for this one on the compressionist or the cinematography, but it's not the best day-and-date title I've seen from Warner. Inconsistency plagues the video from start to finish and the pedestrian sound design doesn't help matters.

Bonus Materials

  • Exclusive Sex and the City 2 sneak peek trailer

  • 14 Deleted scenes with intro from Garry Marshall

  • Confessions of Valentine's Day Stories from the cast

  • Gag Reel

  • Jewel "Stay Here Forever" Music Video

  • Commentary by director Garry Marshall

  • "The Garry Factor"

  • DVD plus digital copy of the film

I enjoyed a few of the storylines here but I loathed just as many, which isn't a good thing. The presentation is nothing to write home about either. If you're a fan of one of the many stars it may be worth a rental, but prepare to be disappointed.
