The TaoTronics SoundLiberty 53 Wireless Earphones Sound Decent for $45

They say you get what you pay for. With budget audio products, that’s rarely a good thing. Finding a pair of true wireless earphones for under $50 is a rare thing, and finding ones with acceptable sound quality is even rarer. I had a chance to check out the TaoTronics SoundLiberty 53 earphones that retail for $45. Let’s see what just under fifty bucks gets you these days.

The SoundLiberty 53 are true wireless earphones that come with a charging carrying case. The earphones themselves will play for up to 5 hours on a single charge, but the carrying case supplies an additional 36 hours; TaoTronics claims a total of 40 hours. It has fast-charge capability, and requires 2.5 hours for a complete charge. They have touch controls that will access Siri and/or Google Assistant in addition to taking/making phone calls and controlling volume and track playback.

The SoundLiberty 53 earphones feature Bluetooth 5.0 but lack audio features such as aptX. They turn on and pair automatically when removed from the charging case. They will connect as a stereo pair, or they can be used individually. One nit-pick: they do not turn off automatically when removed from your ears; they must be returned to the charging case or disconnected from the Bluetooth source, in which case they’ll turn off after 10 minutes.

TaoTronics claims the earphones are rated for IPX7 water-resistance, so while they’re not really suitable for swimming, they are waterproof for up to 30 minutes in less than 1 meter of water. What this means for me is that with their price and that rating, I have no fear in taking them to the gym and getting in a strenuous workout.

Sunday mornings at the gym are quite quiet, so I thought it was a good place to audition the SoundLiberty 53. I warmed up listening to Sigrid’s “Raw”, which is always a challenge for bass response. The plucked strings that open the song had a nice solid sound, but the deeper bass notes lacked impact and definition. In addition, the earphones had a very slight vibration on deep, low notes that was mildly uncomfortable. Sigrid’s voice had a slightly harsh tone that was more pronounced at louder listening levels.

To cool down, I listened to “The Rains” by Henry Jamison which has a gorgeous tight kick drum sound. Again, there was a slight “tickle” from the earphones on the impacts. Jamison’s voice had a slightly veiled sound, lacking upper high-end sparkle. Back home, I connected the earphones to my laptop to watch some YouTube videos. I noticed a very slight lag in the audio sync, but it wasn’t significant. In general, they weren’t as transparent and natural as some other headphones, and lacked an accurate deep bass. However, all in all, they delivered acceptable sound for the price.

For an economical wireless earphone, the SoundLiberty 53 earphones were much better than I was expecting. They’re not nearly as good as some high-end earphones, but then again, I wouldn’t bring an expensive set of 'phones to the gym. For workouts or rainy commutes, the TaoTronics SoundLiberty 53 are more than adequate. It turns out that you get quite a lot for under fifty bucks.
