Sony Improves its Wireless Noise-Canceling Earbuds

Sony today announced new wireless earbuds featuring improved noise canceling technology.

Slated to hit stores in August and available now for pre-sale on amazon.com, the $230 WF-1000XM3 earbuds incorporate Sony’s new low-power-consumption QN1e noise-canceling processor, which uses dual noise sensors with feed-forward and feed-back microphones to pick up more of the ambient sound around the user and cancel “significantly more noise across almost all frequencies.”

The earbuds, described as small and lightweight, are optimized for voice control via Google Assistant and feature a new Bluetooth chip that enables content to be transmitted simultaneously to both earbuds rather than conventional left-to-right delay transmission, and a revamped antenna structure to ensure a “highly stable” connection.

Sony has improved comfort and in-ear stability using a tri-hold earbud structure with a high-friction rubber surface, and upped sound quality with 24-bit audio signal processing and a built-in amp/digital-to-analog convertor (DAC); both work in tandem with Sony’s Sound Enhancement Engine HX (DSEE HX), which is upscales the resolution of compressed-music files for improved sound quality.

The earbuds include a sleek carrying case that doubles as a charger capable of providing three 6-hour charges with a quick-charge function that provides up to 90 minutes of play time after only 10 minutes of charging.

A Quick Attention mode, engaged by placing a finger over the left earbud, enables listeners to quickly tune into what’s going on around them without having to remove the earbuds, while touch sensors can be used to control music playback or activate Google Assistant with simple taps; the controls can be customized using Sony’s Headphone Connect app.

A “wearing detection” feature also automatically pauses music whenever one of the earbuds is removed and resumes playback when it returns to the ear.
