Samsung and Blockbuster Get Hitched

With Netflix signing streaming deals with everyone in sight, it was only a matter of time till Blockbuster cut a streaming deal with a major manufacturer--and Samsung is pretty major. Blockbuster streaming will come to Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players with the first models coming this fall.

In addition to new streaming-capable products, some existing ones will be able to stream Blockbuster OnDemand. These include Samsung's 2009 BD players and HTIBs, LCD and plasma TVs from Series 650 and above, and LED TVs from Series 7000 and above. The TVs will need to download the Blockbuster OnDemand widget, while a firmware upgrade will be required for the other products.

Viewers will be able to search and browse onscreen, rent or buy their selections, and then commence "instant viewing," about which Blockbuster says: "Blockbuster's adaptive streaming technology ensures quality viewing with immediate and uninterrupted playback." So you needn't add an external storage device. Blu-ray player menus will give preferred positioning to Blockbuster OnDemand.
