Rega Updates Classic Turntable

U.S. distributor The Sound Organisation has announced the availability of an update of the popular Planar 2 turntable U.K.-based Rega introduced more than 40 years.

The product of two years of R&D, Rega engineers have remade the classic table with a new tonearm, platter, low-noise 24-volt motor, acrylic laminated plinth, and central bearing.

Priced at $675, each Planar 2 turntable is hand assembled and tested over a two-day period to “ensure Rega’s strict quality control demands are met.”

The RB220 tonearm incorporates Rega’s patent-pending “ultra-low friction zero play” ball bearings, which are housed in a new stiffer yet lightweight housing featuring an automatic bias setting, which makes the turntable plug and play apart from arm balancing. The new housing also includes an integrated arm clip and uses a custom aluminum arm tube.

The table’s patent-pending 11mm self-securing brass bearing is said to offer an improved fit with less stress on the bearing to prevent energy transfer.

Other highlights include a 10mm Optiwhite floating glass platter and a plinth finished in black or white pressure-laminated acrylic and fitted with hollow cone feet to increase stability and reduce vibration transfer.

The Planar 2, equipped with a factory-installed MM Carbon cartridge and motor cover, weighs 12 pounds and measures 4.5 x 17.5 x 14 inches with the lid closed.
