Recycle Wisely, Says CEA

Got some electronic joy for the holidays? Congratulations! Now what should you do with the old stuff it's replacing? The Consumer Electronics Association has a few tips on just that subject.

First, recycle. Most major manufacturers and retailers have programs. Click the press release link at the bottom of this story for some further recycling links. It's important to verify your recycler.

But is that old product really ready for the junkpile? Maybe not. Consider giving it to the needy instead. Be sure to remove your personal information first. For instance, if you're donating a cell phone or computer, wipe the memory or hard drive.

CEA notes that 80 percent of consumers bought consumer electronic products this holiday season. If most of them follow these tips, that would be pretty good for the environment. For the full checklist see press release.
