OEL (organic electroluminescent) technology is said to be similar to OLED (organic light-emitting diode) but uses semiconductors instead of diodes. A TWICE report, quoting the Nikkei News Service, says Sony will join an existing joint venture with Toshiba and Matsushita (now corporately known as Panasonic).
They want to produce OEL displays of 40 inches and up within a decade or so. Unlike existing OLED displays, which are on the small side, OEL would be thin enough to attach to the wall "like a poster," says TWICE. A smaller variation of OEL is already widely used in car audio gear.
In addition to the TV manufacturers, other partners in the OEL joint venture include a chemical company, a screen maker, and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
