Phorus Ships First Alexa-Enabled Play-Fi Speaker

DTS has announced that the first DTS Play-Fi-enabled speaker to incorporate Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service is now available.

The PS10 ($249) from DTS subsidiary Phorus features a far-field microphone that works in tandem with advanced signal processing to pick up voice commands in noisy environments, even from across the room and even when the speaker is playing music. It can be controlled via voice commands or the DTS Play-Fi app, which facilitates wireless connection with any of the more than 200 Play-Fi-compatible products available from a number of brands, including Definitive Technology, Klipsch, MartinLogan, McIntosh, Paradigm, Pioneer, Polk Audio, SVS Sound, and Thiel Audio.

When DTS Play-Fi products are grouped together, music plays to the group simultaneously regardless of the selected source. The PS10 is also the first Alexa-compatible product to include (four) one-touch music presets and support for hi-res 192-kHz/24-bit audio.

The sound producing side of the PS10 comprises a 30-watt Class D amplifier with DTS audio processing and 2.5-inch drivers, bolstered by a pair of 4-inch bass boosting passive radiators.

Apps available on the Play-Fi platform include Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Juke, KKBox, Napster, Qobuz, QQ Music, SiriusXM, and thousands of Internet radio stations. The PS10 also supports playback through Airplay and Spotify Connect and has a 3.5mm input for connecting analog sources, which can be streamed wirelessly to other Play-Fi-enabled speakers. A line-level output with a variable level control and Wolfson digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is also provided for connection to other audio gear.

DTS said the PS10 will support Amazon’s Connected Speaker API via a future firmware update, which will enable the speaker to select and control music on DTS Play-Fi-enabled speakers throughout the home.
