Onkyo and Pioneer Receivers Now ‘Sonos Certified’

Onkyo USA has announced a free firmware update that will make certain Onkyo, Integra, Pioneer, and Pioneer Elite brand AV receivers are compatible with Sonos’ proprietary wireless audio platform.

Upgraded models will bear a “Works with Sonos” badge to indicate compatibility with Sonos, including the ability to stream music from the Sonos App and use the app to control the receiver. Onkyo said specific models will be announced when the firmware update becomes available on June 6.

The certification program is intended to ensure that receivers carrying the Sonos badge connect seamlessly with the Sonos stable of products and instantly wake when a connected Sonos system is activated.

“Working with Onkyo and Onkyo USA demonstrates steps we are taking in our larger partner strategy,” said Andrew Volyanetes, director of the U.S. Installed Solutions channel for Sonos. “We want to work closely with the manufacturers that custom installers use most, like Onkyo. We also love that the integration allows our customers to decrease their time to music and get that magical Sonos experience when using a non-Sonos speaker.”

“Adding Sonos compatibility enables custom installers and home theater fans access to Sonos’ renowned whole-home audio [system],” said Don Milks, director of product localization for Onkyo USA. “Now the Sonos app that you are familiar with can stream your favorite content to your network receiver adding tremendous value and convenience to any system.”
