New Healthy Ears Headphone Shows Volume in dB

Puro Sound Labs, maker of wireless headphones for kids, today announced a wireless headphone for adults that monitors volume and reports the level in decibels (dB).

The Healthy Ears BT5200 headphone contains a microprocessor that measures listening levels and lights up a multi-colored LED indicator to indicate whether levels are safe or too loud:

  • Green (85 dB or less) = Enjoy safe listening at this level for up to 8 hours.
  • Yellow (85–95 dB) = Caution: limit listening at this level to no more than 2 hours.
  • Red (over 95 dB) = Stop: limit listening at this level to no more than 15 minutes a day.
The BT5200 ($130) will be available for order at PuroSound.com on December 15 or you can pre-order at the discounted price of $100.

"Long exposure to sound above 85dB, like loud music, can cause noise induced hearing loss—a condition that is 100 percent preventable," said Claire Schultz, CEO, of the Hearing Health Foundation. "By allowing the user to see what level their sound is set at, they can more accurately adjust the sound levels appropriately and decrease their prolonged exposure to loud noise to reduce the risk of premature hearing loss." Offered in black or tan/gold, the BT5200 folds flat and is made of lightweight aluminum with an anodized finish said to resist scratches and fingerprints. The headphone supports Bluetooth 4.0 and aptX coding and has 40mm custom drivers, tuned to “recreate the natural sound produced in a perfectly tuned listening room,” according to the company.

“Protein leather” ear pads are said to form a seal that blocks more than 80 percent of ambient noise and battery life is rated as 24 hours (260 hours standby). The headphone has a built-in microphone for use with Apple or Android devices. Accessories include a hard carrying case, USB charging cable, and a minijack audio cable.
