New DVDO Air Adapters Send HDMI Signals Wirelessly

DVDO has expanded its Air WirelessHD series with two moderately priced systems designed to transmit 1080p or 4K/Ultra HD video signals over the air.

The Air 2K ($229) system supports signals up to 1080p/60, while the Air 4K ($399) is designed to handle signals up to 2160p/30, both with 7.1-channel PCM audio up to 192k Hz or 7.1-channel DTS-HD Master Audio up to 96kHz or 5.1 channels up to 192 kHz.

Comprising a compact transmitter and receiver, each system is based on the 60-GHz WirelessHD standard and said to leverage advanced radar technology to deliver cable-like reliability with “near-zero lag time” between the video source and a TV/video display up to 30 feet away (in-room) or 100 feet (line-of-sight) “without any interference from Wi-Fi.”

DVDO said phased-array beam-forming technology automatically scans the room and looks for the best path from transmitter to receiver in every frame of video — up to 60 times a second — to avoid frequency interference.

“Comparatively, 2.4GHz and 5GHz-based Wi-Fi networks are subject to frequent interference and are forced to compress video to fit in their available bandwidth,” the company explained. “DVDO Air is specifically designed with up to a 3Gb/s data rate and professional-grade technology [to] make it easy to connect video in locations where wire runs might be difficult or impossible.”

Maximum resolution ratings are 4K/30Hz 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 8 bit for the Air 4K and 1080p 60Hz 4:4:4, 12 bit for the Air 2K.

Both models support auto input sensing, CEC passthrough and are equipped with a proprietary wireless configuration tool with advanced setup features and feedback, including the ability to update software and monitor signal strength.
