Netflix Launches Smart Downloading

Netflix today introduced a new Smart Downloads feature for Android devices that automatically deletes a downloaded episode of a show after you’ve watched it and downloads the next episode.

Smart Downloads is available on Android phones and tablets running the latest version of the Netflix app and turns on only when the device is connected to Wi-Fi in an effort to conserve data usage and device storage.

“We know how annoying it can be to go through all your apps and delete files you no longer need,” said Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation. “We also understand that when it comes to Netflix, the faster you can get to the next episode you want to watch, the better.

Netflix noted that subscribers have the option of turning off the Smart Downloads feature so they can manage downloads manually.

The new download option comes two years after the streaming powerhouse let subscribers download shows for watching on the go.
