Marantz Adds Heos/Alexa-Ready AVRs to Slim Series

Marantz has updated its popular Slim Series of AV receivers with two affordably priced, low-profile models that support Alexa voice control and Denon’s Heos wireless multiroom streaming platform.

The 7.2-channel NR1609 ($749) and 5.2-channel NR1509 ($549) are rated to deliver 50 watts per channel into seven or five channels, respectively, and support 4K/60 Hz passthrough, 4:4:4 color, and three high dynamic range (HDR) formats: HDR10, Dolby Vision compatibility, and Hybrid Log-Gamma, or HLG. The NR1609 is equipped with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and DTS Virtual:X immersive surround processing, while the NR1509 provides Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround processing.

Both models feature wireless streaming via Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, or the Heos app and voice control via the Heos Home Entertainment Skill. Voice commands can be used to play/pause/ stop music, switch inputs, adjust volume, and more. Built-in streaming support includes Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, and Deezer.

Other common features include a discrete high-current amplifier section, high-resolution audio support up to 24-bit/192-kHz with DSD 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz playback, an integrated phono input, Audyssey automated room calibration, dual subwoofer outputs, and an HDMI output that supports HDCP 2.2 copy protection and the ARC (Audio Return Channel) and CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) protocols. Both receivers also support IP control and are compatible with Control4 systems.

Differences between the NR1609 and NR1509 include 8 HDMI inputs for the former compared with six for the NR1509. The NR1609 also offers a higher degree of sound/setup customization via the optional Audyssey MultEQ Editor app ($20), ISF image calibration, and Zone 2 pre-outs.
