LG CineBeam Projectors Get Alexa Upgrade

LG has announced a firmware update that adds Amazon Alexa voice/virtual-assistant capabilities to two 4K Ultra HD projectors in its CineBeam series.

The update, which is accessible when the projector is connected to the internet, enables Alexa on the $1,800 LED-based HU70LA and $6,000 laser-based, ultra-short-throw HU85LA projector.

Once the update is installed, owners of these projectors can access the virtual assistant through LG’s Magic remote control and use Alexa to control smart home products, play music and audiobooks, set up Alexa Routines, and use voice commands to access thousands of Alexa Skills.

An Alexa Routine enables a string of actions to be executed by a single voice command. Saying “Alexa, start game night,” for example, might dim the lights, make a house-wide announcement that gaming is about to begin, and launch the Alexa Skill for “Jeopardy.”

Built around LG’s webOS 4.5 smart platform, both projectors provide direct access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and other streaming services.
