LCD TV Sales Buck Economic Woes

The world economy may be tottering, but TV sales are on the rise, especially LCD TV sales.

TV shipments managed a mildly encouraging two percent increase in 2009, totaling 211 million units worldwide. Better yet, LCD shipments grew a whopping 37 percent, beating an almost equally healthy increase of 34 percent in 2008, with the Chinese domestic market leading the pack.

However, revenues dropped by 7 percent, presumably due to lower selling prices, which dropped 8 percent.

Among brands, Samsung emerged at the top of the heap, followed by LG, Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp. Only the two Korean brands exhibited year-to-year market share growth, with the others losing market share.
